Visceral manipulation is a gentle, manual therapy that helps harmonize tension around internal organs and thus contributes to their proper functioning. Physiotherapists use this technique to treat, for example, abdominal pain, constipation, digestive disorders such as gastroesophageal reflux disease and many others.
The internal organs are surrounded by connective tissue that holds them in place in the body. Healthy connective tissue should move easily to allow the organs to move relative to each other, such as when you rotate or bend your torso. The connective tissue should be loose enough to allow the stomach to expand when we eat, the lungs to open and take in air when we inhale, and the intestines to contract and relax to move food further down the digestive tract into the large intestine.
Tight or inflamed connective tissue prevents these small but significant movements, which can cause discomfort in the area of internal organs and subsequently dysfunction, which can lead to limited movement and pain in completely different parts of the body, such as shoulder. The human body is a complex system with many interconnected subsystems that all work together to allow the body to function properly. When any of these systems is disrupted in any way, the body creates compensation to reduce the strain on the body.
The cause of increased tension in the ligament area can be, for example, inflammation caused by illness or trauma. In the event of an injury itself (e.g. a major fall, car accident), a small shift of the organ (stretching of the ligament) can occur, which can subsequently cause pain or discomfort. Even during pregnancy, the organs are forced to retreat due to the enlarging uterus, which can cause, for example, constipation.
Also, surgical procedures (basically any abdominal/thoracic surgery) including caesarean sections, side effects of medications or chemotherapy can create connective tissue adhesions in the area of internal organs. As a result of the scar healing processes, the connective tissue supporting the skin can bind to deeper tissues, thereby gradually creating restrictions on the movement of individual layers of the connective tissue and creating pain or discomfort. Last but not least, the tension of the connective tissue is influenced by the level of stress load and the associated posture.
The therapy is non-invasive and painless, using gentle pressure, traction and specific organ mobilizations leading to ligament relaxation and tension harmonization. In most cases, it is supplemented with self-therapy in the form of specific exercises or self-pressure.
Specific problems that we solve:
- “heartburn” = reflux
- chest pain – worse when lying on your back and after eating
- a feeling of a foreign body in your throat or difficulty swallowing
- a feeling of sourness in your mouth
- a chronic cough with no apparent cause
- stomach pain
- constipation
